I find having a lead at 3-away to be the most difficult score at which to decide on doubles. 2-away is easy - don't. 4-away is close enough to money.
Of course, I prefer the problem of protecting my 3-away lead to the trailer's problem of having to erase that lead.
Here, I was the trailer and had maneuvered myself into this hideous position. Trailing 3-away 7-away did not change the fact that 2-away 7-away is far less scary than trying to bring this home while not getting gammoned. No way I was taking here.
But as the leader, it is easy to find all the ways the position can turn and you're eating a 4-cube.
Perhaps the trick to these 3-away leading scores is one I learned long ago and never seem to remember to apply over the board. Turn the board around in your head and imagine being your opponent. Then ask if you'd be happy seeing the cube in this position.
