One man closed out and 2 on the mid gets g'd ~25% of the time...

I haven't read Zare's article so I don't know whether you're referring to the opponent having a crushed board (as I was) or a closed board. A crushed board seems to give ~27% gammons and a closed board only ~23.5%.
