I'm not sure if you are asking me or Neil, but in case it's me...
5/4 isn't "clear" to me; it just feels natural. After playing 8/3 with the 5, I'm looking for the most flexibility in building my board. Double-slotting is often the quickest way to build a board (and the blots in Stick's board give us more freedom to do so). If we make the 3pt now, we're not only making our points out of order, but we leave the 4pt unslotted, so it will usually take two cooperative rolls to make it. 6/5, strips the 6pt and puts a spare in a less flexible place. 7/6 stacks our spares, which is also less flexible.
So 5/4 isn't clear to me, but it seems more flexible. Any roll except 66 makes one of the slotted points and leaves the next point we'll want slotted. I doubt there is much difference between the plays.
