I must admit your analysis makes me feel less bad about losing this match :-)

Somehow whenever I make this kind of error whether it be cube or checker play in say a quarter final of a big tournament I always pay for it and lose! In quarter final of limited jackpot at Las Vegas I took a cube 2 away 4 away that I should have dropped and got gammoned. (About 22% of his about 55% wins were gammons if I remember)

And the other way around for example in quarter final of consolation in Chicago Glass was rolling me over with joker after joker, I hung in there in the match somehow and he made a similar bad cube and gave me a chance to reship to 4 and possibly win match, some kind of holding game if I remember, of course he then rolled a couple of double 4's or 5's to clear mid point and outer points and lock up the race.

I know probably I don't notice the times it goes my way despite errors, it just seems that way :-)
