I often have trouble with these types of plays, but this one seems clearer to me than most.

We're only 8 pips behind after this play. Stick currently has more wastage than we do and, with his checkers on the 7 and 8 points and our rear checker(s) cramping his style, he looks to waste more. I'd guess that we're effectively only 6 pips behind if we run.

If we make our 1pt, we waste pips of our own. Then, next turn, we're either going to run or waste more pips (and crunch our board in the process). If we're going to run next turn, why not do it now and not waste those pips? I don't think we gain enough staying back to make up for the pips we'd waste.
