I think Woolsey's doubling suggestion is a good one. If you don't know whether or not it is a take, you should double. The problem is that it is a decision making criteria based on what you DON'T know rather than what you DO know.
Woolsey's rule isn't based on the idea that you don't understand the take/pass decision for your opponent. It is based on the idea that you KNOW the take/pass decision is a difficult one, i.e. it is very close to the take/pass line. If the opponent is close to a pass or barely has a take, then you are in the right part of the doubling window and should double.
I don't think Woolsey means to say that you should double when you have no clue about the take/pass decision, rather that you know it is a close decision whether it is a take or pass.
Scores like 3-away, 6-away certainly make this entire process more difficult, however, as the doubling window has moved rather radically away from money and the effect of gammons becomes much more acute.
