This was a combination of misevaluating the position as well as managing risk and mental error. I gave far too much weight to my 30 pip racing deficit coupled with two checkers on the roof and not enough weight to the amount of contact and work remaining for Ray. My initial reaction was to take this and I managed to talk myself out of it.
Ray is right that great players take advantage of these situations and the psychological flow of the game. Usually I don't fall prey to that and I am pretty good at taking advantage on the flip side. I think people know by now that I am not afraid to take a tough cube. But in this case, things were going pretty well and the game suddenly took a bad turn and I danced with two on the roof. Momentum is frequently a factor - the avalanche starts and it is easy to imagine it running its course, and I did not detach myself from it as I usually do. Lesson reinforced.
