Glad you're okay Stick.

I learned about 6 weeks after I had my driver's license at 16 that if you make your wrecks spectacular enough your parents are just glad you are alive and don't get mad about the car. When I was a yout my cars had a tendency to roll over and drive on their roof or to fall into ditches or to have dents and scratches and holes in them in the morning that they didn't the night before.

But one lesson I learned about 15 years ago is to drive with two hands in a firm grip on the wheel. I used to, like many people, just barely grip the wheel with one hand or maybe just a few fingers. But then one day while driving northbound towards home during afternoon rush hour in heavy traffic, a car just ahead of me in the left lane of the interstate (two lanes in each direction) had a tire blowout traveling at high speed, lost control, went down into the curved median, up the other side, and into the left lane of the southbound direction.

Fortunately southbound was against the traffic flow and traffic was light and the traffic moved over to the right before this guy wound up at rest in the median. I was in a van pool at the time, and one of the riders commented that the driver probably needed a new pair of skivvies. But what I took out of it was that if you are just steering the wheel with a light finger grip, you are likely to lose control if you have a tire blowout, but if you have two hands on the wheel you are likely to be able to maintain control and avoid the front-end impact of two vehicles going at 75 mph.
