"If you have multiple cores I recommend (for maximum performance) that one try to set the number of Eval Threads to the number of cores on the system. This allows Gnubg to split up the evaluation tasks across multiple threads which can then be run on different cores. "

This, coupled with setting the priority of the gnu process to "Below Normal" in Task Manager will ensure that your machine remains responsive for other things you are doing, while making use of maximum available processor for gnu eval when you don't need the processor for other things.
