I don't think the average user will see a really significant improvement by setting it at the highest level.

For play or analysis (2-ply, I didn't time 4-ply), the improvement is indeed negligible, but for rollouts it is quite significant. It depends on the positions, but they can be 20% to 50% faster when going from the default size to the maximum..
