For play or analysis (2-ply, I didn't time 4-ply), the improvement is indeed negligible, but for rollouts it is quite significant. It depends on the positions, but they can be 20% to 50% faster when going from the default size to the maximum..

Quite the contrary in just two trials... an endgameish position saw an 8-fold increase in speed, and a fifth roll position is seeing a doubling in speed. If I can maintain anywhere near this kind of speed increase, then I'm sticking with it.
