Isnt it Walter Trice who made some extensive studies of bearoff races?
I myself find them to be extremely useful. Think about it, this (other than the beginning of a game) is probably one of the most common and frequent thing to happen - a bearoff race. Knowing when to ship/reship/take/pass can save and gain you so many points. If you know your takepoints and shipping points in all bearoffs, then you wont ever lose equity, and you will gain when your opponent doesnt. Also, die rolls tend to have a more significant impact on GWC & MWC during the endgame, so errors get larger. Not 100% sure about my last statement there.... I am sure someone will jump on me if its wrong.
