Races are important, of course. So are memorizing openings. So are memorizing cube reference positions. So are memorizing match equities and doubling windows and gammon prices at 100 different match scores. But I know my capabilities and memory is not one of them (luckily I learned how to remember the first half of the pipcount on my fingers). So I retain enough simple rules to be dangerous, calculate when I absolutely must and overall manage to get the right answer most of the time. Yes, I give away equity by not having an encyclopedic brain. Hopefully I make up for it in other areas. And often enough, my opponent is nice enough to reward my errors with one of their own.
