In Response To: Comments on the Web Lecture (Jason Lee)

I am delighted to hear a player of your caliber enjoyed the seminar. Here are comments I made to Phil, Mary and Stick in an email I sent after the web lecture. They mirror yours to a large extent ( I think all your suggestions are excellent):

I don’t favor the structure of tonight’s seminar as the best way to review matches. I think its fine, if you only are teaching the player’s themselves, to begin by identifying their errors. But I think it’s much better for those not having played the match, to commit to the moves they would make, rather than showing them the errors at the outset.

In our internet setting, perhaps best would be to give the participants a game to record their preferred moves beforehand, so no time would be lost once the seminar started. Then my preference is to select whoppers or important errors in the game which were common to a large number of participants, where the one and two candidate plays represent different ‘directions of play’. I would expound on these and see if the participants understand what is going on by testing them with variations. Naturally, this requires rollouts and advance study.

An example of what I mean is a theme that came up several times tonight. It was the lack of appreciation and attention, in several different kinds of situations, to the importance of committing to fighting for outfield control. Further examples of when you do, and when you don’t, could be instructive to even championship caliber players.

My comments were in response to Phil stating he thought one could learn more by going over specific parts of the game. I agreed that's invaluable but also think going over matches can be a quite an eye opener.
