Comments on the Web Lecture

I too attended the WebLecture and am I glad I did. I feel that it was well worth my $10 and 2 hours.
Here, for what they’re worth, are my thoughts/suggestions. (Most of them are consistent with Jason.)
1. At first, I had wished that the bot used was GNU (or Snowie) rather than one I was unfamiliar with (ExtremeGammon). But ExtremeGammon was generally easy to follow and, as I look back now, I'm glad I got to see another bot.
2. No matter which bot is used, I agree with Jason that it would be nice if we didn’t see the bot information when each position first came up. I found that, when I was looking at the position and trying to determine my play, I couldn’t help but look over at the bot information, especially given that the error move was shown on the board with arrows. I think it would be nice to first show the position without any bot info or arrows, and let us each study the position for a minute before anyone says anything (and/or see 3 below)
3. Or, perhaps the participants could see and study the positions a day or two before the lecture. I saw that there was an agenda button on WebEx. I wonder if positions could be posted there?
4. I too was mostly quiet. I asked only one question. The best part of the lecture for me was listening to Perry, Mary, Stick and Phil talk about the positions, decisions, and concepts. Yet, in any lecture or class, I think there should be room for questions to the experts. A problem with the web format is that you can’t just raise your hand and wait to be called on. So, various people end up talking at the same time. I wonder how this problem could be solved in the WebEx format. Perhaps, if you have a question, you could type “Question” or Question about xxxtopic” in the chat function, and then Phil could call on the questioner’s one at a time.
5. Going from error to error in a match was ok. (We all do this for our matches. So we are familiar with the approach.) But, as Jason says, a theme-based approach would be good. – A suggestion: quite a few of the errors involved doubles. Maybe there could be session on “Playing Doubles.” And the lecturers/experts could pick (and distribute) positions beforehand to illustrate various themes.
Allow me to end this ramble by once again thanking Phil, Perry, Mary, and Stick.
Sincerely,
-Marc
