Containment concepts

Only modifying other people's points.

1. Block the super jokers - but only when feasible. This becomes less important the closer you get to getting off the gammon. In this case 44 is the wild one

When the super joker isn't really a *super joker* I worry less about it. Here for example if the checker on the 16pt was pushed back to the 17pt all 44 would do is to run into a triple shot + and it would be clear you should concentrate on some other containment concept.

Play aggressively to build the prime that will be most effective for you. i.e. slot the bar point, slot the hole in the b

In most scenarios, yes, but it of course depends on the state of your opponent's board how aggressively you should go about these things.

I can only add a couple of points that may apply to other positions. Break off your back points, you don't need made far away points, you need overall coverage. This should be common sense but it's a way to get a feel for the priority of the position. In your posted position the first thing I'd note is I'm either playing 20/15 or 20/18 to split those checkers, this will help narrow down my options. Next I'd move on to seeing I wasn't going to block 44 this turn. I try to weed my way down to the best play by tossing candidates out the window.

Where is he most likely to hop in the outfield and how many checkers do I have aimed at that (those) points? In your example, if your opponent throws 64 or 54 you have at least a double shot at his blot, possibly a triple depending on how you broke off the 20pt. However, what about his other in and jump numbers? He has 62 52 61 and with the latter two of those you currently only have single coverage. That may be a sign you want more coverage (and builders) for those points.

In this particular position you should see immediately that making the 4pt is key because you don't need to finish off the position, you need to make the 4pt and have him be in the air and you can probably cash the game since he only has two checkers off. I think this subject, which I myself have devoted little time to, might make for an interesting study. It comes up often enough though the plays I make tend to be small errors, I could definitely use some work in this field too. It's hard to see what top priority is in some of these positions.
