The spot was that he gives me 1.5 on the eval if I lost the match. If I won the match there would be no spot. So essentially, there was no way he could lose money so long as he played better than me, and that is a no-brainer. I would probably outplay Matt about 1 out of 5 times at the most. We were killing time and I was willing to pay something to get a lesson.

I play many, many matches on eXtreme or GNU where we bet on both the match and the eval....I find it sharpens my game; makes me concentrate harder on every play; and helps me remember my errors better.

We also play "challenge" backgammon where we play matches or money games but each player has the opportunity to bet on any play or cube decision throughout the match. That REALLY is a game of skill and really sharpens your game.
