I believe that voting has suffered from voting for players who are basically out of action. But, I do not think that arbitrary requirements help anything. Consider Nack Ballard. I don't have his exact participation record and he has certainly been far less active than he was in the past. But, he has done research on the game, written one great book (and will hopefully write more), developed his Nactation system, played in the Million, played in the high stakes doubles tournament, and has played in Las Vegas. He is still around and he is still a great player, possibly the best. Why should anyone omit him from their ballot because of his ABT attendance and points? Voters should simply ask whether or not a candidate has been sufficiently active to receive a vote. If a voter is unaware of a players activity, that should be evidence enough to consider voting for a different player. But, there's no reason to apply a rigid standard to everyone.
