I'm not sure I much care for this. Surely it's in the nature of backgammon that whatever move you make the next chance to mess up belongs to your opponent. Taking this '1-ply' approach is giving it back to you and skewing your equity down. It might be OK if you went one move further ahead and rolled out all the 441 combinations, just not feasible.
