Long / Close Rollouts

I thought the goal of doing rollouts to know what is best assuming perfect play? Why would you think rollout results are more trustworthy if we base them on known errors in play in the next ply rather than deriving results using more likely to be correct plays? Taking that logic, we should pick plays at random in the odd plys as that will be more likely to be to our advantage. Using rollout results at any opportunity is still not perfect, but it has to be better than using bot evaluations.
