French Open Finals

The pros who currently compete against Federer tend to say he is the best ever, because it would be ingracious to say anything else. Of course someone who just lost to Federer is not going to say "Well, he's one of the greatest ever, although Laver is right up there!"
The retired pros and commentators, who are in a position to be more objective, universally recognize that it's legitimate to ask if Federer is the greatest ever, but it's overstating the point to claim that the argument is settled. Of course, Federer's career is far from over and it's easy to imagine that there may be no debate at all by the time he hangs it up.
The only knock on Federer is that while his tournament record is second to none, he has a losing record against his chief rival (who just happens to be five years younger and a great player in his own right, of course). I think he may very well be the greatest ever in spite of that fact, but sometimes I think we rush too quickly to render the verdict of history. We still have to see what Federer (and Nadal, for that matter) is capable of from this point forward.
