Agreed, all in all, this was a very well run event with no problems that I observed. There is no question that the attendance was much lower than expectations (I certainly expected a full 32 player draw in the Open). I am sure that the low attendance contributed to the relaxed atmosphere and lack of scheduling issues. In fact, IMO, the event should be scheduled one less day next year and it can always be lengthened again if attendance demands it.

It is a shame that Chiva had to take a financial hit because of the low attendance. Yet he seems committed to make the US Open as an annual event a reality. It needs our support. Obviously, it is the first year, and the scheduling might not have been the best time. But I have to also believe that all the fuss made over the entry fee business may have put a bad spin on the event in some people's minds. Why some people would be willing to spend $500 for airfare and 3 nights hotel in a remote city, but not be willing to spend an extra $100 to go to a local tournament is beyond me. The director has to fill rooms, period. So this director tried something innovative to do that. I understood this and arrived Thursday night, even though I could drive and did not need to be there until noon Friday. The incentive certainly motivated me to book an extra person-night at the venue.

IMO, the better way for Chiva to have done this was to simply charge a $30 conference facilities fee to anyone without a 3-night hotel reservation in their own name that goes directly to tournament costs rather than back into the prize pool. If you share a room, split the fee with your roommate. It is always possible to offer added prize money if attendance exceeds some minimum size (i.e. the tournament becomes profitable).

Again, good job Chiva, Bill and the tournament staff for a well run event.

Congrats to Bill Finneran - a local - who still attended and won the Masters.

Congrats to Carol of course who always pays her dues to this game and deserves some reward.
