French Open Finals

If you want to talk about how stiff the competition is then you should appreciate that a discussion of the overall competition in a sport is called for when claiming that an athlete should be called the best athlete ever due to dominance in a single sport.

I see the overall competition in tennis as being much less than for more popular sports such as basketball or soccer. When growing up we all played baseball, football, basketball. But hardly any of us played tennis. So I see tennis as drawing from a smaller population making dominanance at it less impressive. Is my experience common to others? On a related note are there any top pros who did not get top level coaching before say the age of 14? I believe there are many in other sports who did not.
