Yeah, I was looking at the wrong processor, but I can still get the one you are interested in for ~630 each, not the 1k you have seen.

The other option is you drop (gasp) down to a 2 x 4 x 2.66GHz and you can get the CPUs for ~ 400 each

And the dualy motherboard you can get for ~ $135

So 135+400+400 = 935, or for that extra 2 x 4 x .17 GHz you can do 135+630+630 = 1390. With that being the lions share of the cost of the system, I'll stick by my quote of sub 3k. Email me if you ever want a build...
