Why change the ABT point system? Why not incorporate the ideas you have here with an ELO rating that is calculated concurrently with the ABT points? That would enable people to see "how they're doing" even if they've never cashed.

This would also allow non-ABT tournaments, such as European and Japanese ones, to participate in a combined ranking system with ours. Though for the most part there would be continentally segregated pools of players within the system that seldom intersected, I don't think this would cause too much inaccuracy in this particular case (though in theory it could lead to measurable distortions, as I believe it does on some of the servers).

This would have to be done for the Open divisions only, or the distortions would be monumental. The highest ranked players in the world would be intermediate sandbaggers! Leaving the lower divisions out of it could provide an added benefit: people would move up voluntarily when they felt ready, instead of waiting for a tap on the shoulder from an un-amused director.
