ABT Point System Insight

I think that there are many kinds of statistics that can be gathered such as W/L, Elo rating, etc. Many of these stats can be maintained lifetime, rolling N-year, current calendar year, etc. with the right software.
But I don't at all like the idea of making the ABT point system into an attendance tracker. As it is, someone that shows up at 20 events greatly increases their chances. Just imagine giving points for all the times someone shows up and loses in the second round. Should someone be able to finish in the top 20 of the ABT if they showed up 20 times and did not cash once? No. The ABT should recognize results, not attendance. Show up and you have more chances to obtain results. That is the incentive. Personally I like the idea that anyone can potentially go to 4 events, win 2 of them and take the ABT title.
I do think there may be ways to improve upon the current point system. For example, should someone who finishes second twice get more points than someone that finishes first once? Should any two tournaments having 64 players always award the same number of points to the winner? Or should the number of points one winner gets be less because that director chose to pay the semi-finalists in the Consolation?
I have my opinion on all of this stuff. I've proposed things that have not been accepted. I've proposed things that have. The forces that be are not opposed to change, they just have a high bar and require that any change have a substantial benefit. But regardless, the system works as it is. Supplement it with more information by all means.
