ABT Point System Insight

My son got ABT points from winning Beginner consolation, but I don't think anyone will take that to mean he is better than Open players with no points. I think it is rare that any non-open player contends for the ABT title. The solution is to not allow an Intermediate player sitting in the top 5-10 of the ABT at mid-year to continue to play Intermediate. Force them up. Let them prove they can compete at the next level. Nobody who has had continued success should be allowed to keep playing the entire year, so I don't like the idea of having a full year intermediate award. I don't have a problem with including them in the general point pool, but with the current 50% depreciation on their results. I like the fact that lifetime ABT points accrue and that when you move up you don't have to start over. I like the idea that success in the intermediate can be worth something and prompt guys like Chris Knapp to move up and try to win the ABT at the next level, and actually have success after doing so and be in the running.
I do think there needs to be some standard whereby a player becomes inelligible for ABT points at the lower level and must move up to earn more. Perhaps anyone that passes 15-20 ABT points in a single year must move up. I agree - nobody should be able to finish in the top 3 of the ABT purely on intermediate or beginner results.
