Phil....your ideas here are well thought out and valid, but after reading the replies from others here, I remain unconvinced that any changes are needed and also if we make major changes I remain unconvinced that they will increase participation.

The one thing we do need is a ELO ratings list, however.

A few thoughts about the current ABT from someone who's been playing tourney BG for more than twice as long as the ABT has existed.

These are my opinions based on my observations and note that I am only calling it like I see it.

1) The fact that we have an ABT results in a typical Championship division having about 2 or 3 more players than it otherwise would. I cannot speak for inter or beginners, but suspect that combined there's a player or two more often from those that accompany champ players.

2) ABT Champ tourneys near the end of the season may have even 5 or 6 more players if the standings are close and hard fought.

Of course everyone would like to increase participation, but I am not convinced that "participation points", or even points for every match won are the way to do it"...ie I have doubts that it will help matters.

3) Lets look at the Chicago Bar Pt club master point standings. I believe the club still awards everyone a small fraction of points for each match won...or is it each match played or is it only for those who don't place? Anyhow..it takes about 30 pts to win the annual title, but what do you get .04 or .08 for each match played or won if you don't place? That is a minute compared to what is needed to win the title. Is it better than nothing..well maybe, but does it increase participation.. I doubt it has any effect.

4) In chess, we have ratings and people happily play for the pride of playing even when they cannot place, and honestly some are more attached to their ratings than they are to their spouses. In bridge, we have a masterpoint system and it is reasonably easy to get MP's in bridge, but the player still needs to PLACE to get MP's. If you suck or if you play with someone who can't follow suit, you won't place very often.

In short and after a few days thought, I am opposed to making any major changes to the ABT point structure, but would like to see an ELO ratings system, provided it isn't abused by selective reporting and provided every little weekly isn't rated from places like Podunk, Pleasantville, Chicago, LA, DC or whereever. Only major events should be rated.
