The real bugaboo with Vegas before it joined the ABT was the large percentage of the prize pool that Howard awarded to the winner (42%). Combined with the large attendence it was almost a slam-dunk that the winner of the ABT would always come from Las Vegas (in a good year you might have gotten 50+ points for winning Vegas.)

Once the ABT points allocation was changed to be based strictly on the places paid (and not the actual dollar amounts), it was easy to add Vegas to the ABT. The 96-player limit was also added to help cap any one very large tournament from swamping the results.

Side topic: I still wish we could convince Howard to award less money to the main flight. The 70%-20% split between main and consolation is way too large.
