a backgammon problem

A backgammon problem? What the F? That has no place here. :-)
As part of my penance I will answer it.
I'll make the bar and I'll tell you why...besides the ugliness it does to his 5s...If make the bar and he springs one checker with a six then if you pick it up later maybe it will come in on the ace and then need to scooch up to the deuce point before it can get loose again. If you make the eight and he runs with a five, once you pick up that scraggler, if it comes in on the ace...he has 5s and 6s to try to get up to the bar point. Plus if you've made the bar and a later straggler comes in on the ace, the bar point checkers can be used to attack it directly while the 8 point checkers can't. Just some thoughts.
Plus it looks prettier to me and I remember Phil Simborg writing that often the play that looks the prettiest is the best.
