I wanted to post some observations on the time pressure of my match against Hugh Sconyers.

As I mentioned, I wound up with 43 seconds on my clock at the end of the match. Hugh had 47 seconds. In spite of this, any observer would say that Hugh appeared to be under tremendous pressure in the last two games, and that I was playing at my usual pace, although I did play most of the last game standing up.

Hugh wound up pushing the envelope a little bit with some two handed checker play. I can safely say that he didn't do anything that was confusing in any way... for instance, he never tried to move checkers simultaneously, and never made an illegal play. Both Stick and MCG commented that they "wouldn't let that fly." I didn't feel too concerned about it, since I had asked the MFIC himself to observe the DMP game. Patrick intervened only once, when I dropped a die on the floor. Fumble!

I wouldn't be surprised if this was the first time Hugh played under time pressure. He couldn't really work out some of the effects that even he might consider obvious in retrospect. For instance, he managed to use no reserve time in the DMP game, and with 47 seconds of reserve time, even once we got into the bearoff he was needlessly snatching, rolling, and moving frantically.

A match like this is precisely why people need to get experience with clocks -- so that when/if time pressure comes up in a big match, it won't cause you angst. I won that DMP game because I rolled enormous at the right time, and not because of time pressure. But it couldn't have been good for Hugh that he was flustered and scrambling, and I wasn't.

Really tough match for Hugh... he nearly had me finished off earlier, and I wriggled off the hook and kept coming back... then had me all but beat at DMP until I hit the bolt from the blue. I can only imagine what it would be like to lose this... it was enough to make anybody sick.
