Afterwards, did Hugh have anything to say about the clock or clock settings?
Nothing, but he high tailed it out of there pretty fast.
Unfortunately (from my perspective), a match such as yours may only fuel the fire of anti-clock individuals and those promoting increased settings.
Could be.
Why do you think you both used so much time?
For me, it was the so-called UBK doctrine. It was a long (19 games) tough match, and I took my time. In spite of the fact that I dragged it down to 43 seconds, I do not ever feel like I was in any kind of serious time trouble. I had a comfortable 3+ minutes going into DMP and tried to be as careful as possible in an obviously important game.
As I mentioned before, Hugh used up a lot (at least 5, maybe more) minutes in the game where he was down -3*/-1, trying to get a backgammon. He took a lot of time on a LONG game where checkers kept getting recirculated. A lot of my plays were forced or very easy.
I think the real problem for public perception is that Hugh perceived that he was in big trouble, when he wasn't... he was in a LITTLE trouble.
And was it an 11 point match?
13 points.
