clock rules: sudden death?!

Unfortunately (from my perspective), a match such as yours may only fuel the fire of anti-clock individuals and those promoting increased settings.

I disagree: from the view of the spectators, it was even more thrilling to watch, for sure. Think about TV or sponsors' interest.

And, as a former chess player: I like the idea of match loss when your time is over. Kind of sudden-death climax, again, also for the spectators (no idea what the US clock rules say about such a situation).

And, second: it is in the nature of the matches (that go to DMP) to take the most time: they are the longest.
