52 with a 5-prime

OTB I played 6/4* 6/1, and my opponent said he favored 17/12 3/1. We didn't even consider 9/4* 9/7 (still learning the game). I did the rollout and came up with 9/4* 9/7 being best with my move in second. My question is why is it better in this instance to leave 2 blots instead of just one? Is the continuity of the 4 prime that much better than breaking the 6pt to hit?
