The first thing to do with live stats is to figure out what rating formula works like you want it to work. So, even if you are going to start rating in 2010 (which makes sense) I think you want to create a dataset with 2009 data. When you have the dataset, you can test various formulas and ideas to see what works best. The testing is easy once you have the data. So, I would proceed with 2009 even if it is not going to be used.
