LA ABT Cliffnotes

Stick is only partly correct when he says he "played like shit all weekend." There were times he played like shit, but it was a long weekend. I was, however, in on the ground floor, and captured some Kodak moments I'm sure he'd rather forget. (At least, I certainly hope it was the ground, as a blunder bigger than .695 would be mighty scary!) I, on the other hand, cannot say I played like shit. I have too much respect for shit to say that. Maybe Stick caught it from me. Maybe we both caught it from Matt, who was wearing a shirt reading: "You have died of dysentery."
Stick has less to worry about than I do. It was obvious watching him, and discussing backgammon with him afterward, that whatever malady afflicted him was temporary (albeit acute), while mine needs massive doses of practice, else it is probably chronic. Quick! Someone move to Singapore so we can spar.
I hope to have some intelligent things to say about all this in an upcoming Gammon Village article - either August's or September's, as July's ("A Burger In Bunkyo-ku") has already been written.
Meanwhile, it was nice to finally meet Stick, MCG, Rod, and renew acquaintance with Bob Koca and Jason Lee. An advantage Denmark and Japan have had on the US the last decade is their young talent. The US had that, but thirty years later, while I retain my boyish ways, my contemporaries have somehow grayed. (Though Rick Barabino and KG are two exceptions, so much so I wonder about the portraits hidden in their attics.) It is great to see so many excellent young players on the scene and eager to play.
