Ok, I know this suggestion would require more administrative overhead, but, how about maintaining separate ratings for various categories.

For example, Open, Intermediate and Mixed/Side...

Open would include the main Open/Championship event and Open-caliber side events e.g. Masters.

Intermediate would include the Intermediate/Advanced event and Intermediate-caliber side events e.g. Limited jackpots

Mixed/Side would include blitzes, mini-jackpots, etc.

Novice wouldn't be rated, or, if rated, could simply be used as an objective measure to force someone out of it. Very few people want to stick around in Novice anyway but if you win enough to get your rating up say 200-250 past the starting point in Novice you should be required to move up.

This way you see how people stack up at various levels and nobody could, e.g. sandbag a high rating at the Open level from playing in the Advanced since these would be separate ratings.
