Agree - Elo is what matters most. However, WL is interesting too. It would be great if it were possible to view WL in a date range, or "over last N matches", etc.
The other problem with W/L record is the great variation in match lengths. Two players with the same W/L record, even against comparable opponents have not necessarily demonstrated the same skill if their match lengths played are significantly different. Elo factors in both match length and opponent strength.
As for Elo formula, I'd think the FIBS formula should be used as it is the most ubiquitous. However, I think it makes sense to normalize the stats since we are talking about Open level players.
My recommendation would be to start all new Open players with a rating of 1800. If separate Intermediate/Advanced ratings are kept, perhaps they should start with an initial rating of 1650. While not perfect, it might help to provide a bit of consistency between the two data sets. I have no idea what the Elo difference between an average Open vs. an average Intermediate player would be. But 150 Elo points seems about right to me. Certainly, it helps to highlight that any intermediate that reaches and maintains a 1800 rating should probably move up.
