Assume that the overall skill level of players in Open is higher than overall skill level of players in Advanced.

Assume player A and player B are equally skilled.

Player A plays in Open events exclusively. Player B plays in Advanced events exclusively.

If all players are in the same rating category, and all players start at the same arbitrary rating, wouldn't Player B eventually have a higher rating than Player A, such that the two ratings in this case are NOT indicative of skill differential. Without knowing the caliber of the opposition that A and B each faced, one would see B with a higher rating. If the ratings were in separate categories, would could make a more informed judgement on the merits of the ratings.
