I agree with Bill and David. If you polled the people at your local club, I bet you would find that the huge majority of them believe that they are either average or slightly above. I know there are guys at our club who think this way--even guys who lose religiously. Who wants to believe that they are just a punter? And the nature of the game allows this--almost everyone who plays tournament backgammon for a while has a win or two against a top player, and that is enough to keep them going. I believe that there are a certain number of players that would quit if the magnitude of their crappiness was available for all to see. Why would the top players wnat to drive these chaps away?

Tournament play is not cheap. What if somebody's significant other was able to access a resource that revealed that the player wins only 34% of the time. Would the significant other oppose spending $1,000 on a backgammon weekend, even if the guy had cashed in the two-pointer event at Cleveland a few years back? I have to think, maybe so.
