Bill Davis is Smarter Than You Think

ROB; I would think that the people who aren't doing very well also aren't getting many (any) ABT points. Are they not coming because they aren't on that list, or if they are very low on it?
RAY. I never thought of that. Bill Davis' stats are killing the ABT! That was a good question, Rob... and an obviously sarcastic answer by me.
Many of us have been of the opinion that it is too hard to earn an ABT point. Several participation based solutions have been proposed, or systems that earn points for wins. But, that was not how Bill set it up and there is resistance to change... and it WORKS the way it is.
ROB: However, I think the fears are quite overblown
RAY: I would not dismiss his vast experience so easily, my favorite MFIC warns of the very same thing... They have over 60 years of experience, so we should be mindful and learn from their mistakes.
Those mistakes appear to be negative reinforcement for marginal players
So, we print a top 10 list and if someone cares to access the rest they can.
ROB: How about, maybe we gain a few more regular players because of the stats tracking? Maybe a few semi-regular players will become more regular? Why must it be uniformly negative?
RAY: I asked Bill the same question, and he was prepared with answers. He has been there and done that. I don't know how attendance will be affected by stats, but evidently it has had a negative effect before. So we know that the cake might fall if we jerk it out of the oven and we learn to be more gentle with the process.
I have noticed that the bulk of ABT players are fascintated by the best players. There are always 10 to 30 people watching the finals and rooting for their respective favorites. Controversial plays, and players, generate a buzz and excitement.
Maybe we should do trading cards and bubble gum?
Stats will provide long distance fans with a vicarious thrill. Everyone always wants to know who is the best... But those who ignore history are doomed to repeat it, lets listen to our Four-Fathers, (yeah I mispelled that on purpose), like Bill Davis and Patrick Gibson et al.
