Nice post Rob, I'm just glad the Rod didn't post it, that would have made for one heck of a long Subject line ;-)
Here's an idea: compile the stats in a database, but allow each player to choose whether his stats are made public or private. If your stats are not public, you are ineligible for the Giants list. Period. (Of course this would require some future coordination at an international level, this thread seems to focus mainly on the U.S.A for now).
I do not have strong feelings on the subject of stats anyway- we all know it takes hundreds and hundreds of matches to get an accurate assessment, and while we can all rack up lots of matches at online sites, very few players can and will play in enough matches live to reach this threshold, except over many many years.
Let me ask another question, to which I do not know the answer since I do not play or follow poker...Poker is orders of magnitude more popular than backgammon right now, we all know that. Do they attempt to keep some sort of statistics similar to what we are discussing here?
