Interesting comparison of Bridge and Backgammon. Two brief thoughts. BECAUSE we play backgammon for money, another points system/rating system isn't as needed as the built-in incentive is already there.

I really don't see that going to the effort of having a ratings list or W/L statistics will encourage the more successful players to come more often; they already ARE coming more often. These players might like to see their name on the top of that list, but they are going to keep showing up, anyway.

But I can easily see the argument that it could discourage those who aren't as successful, and drive some of them away.

Bill Davis might be right.

Two more thoughts:

Golf keeps track of the 'money list'. ABT points are very much like this money list. It measures in a general way the players that are winning money and how much. (Of course side events aren't counted, but I don't think they should be.) I think it is an excellent system, 'rewarding' the correct people for good results in the main event.

Also, rating Intermediates doesn't really work (if you put them on the same list) as you are putting two separate player pools on the same rating list. The best intermediate could easily have a higher rating that many of the open level players, when his skill level wouldn't be comparable at all.
