I'm looking at the bridge comparison. They play for the fun of the game, certainly, but if their master points system was eliminated, there would be hell to pay. In backgammon, the money incentive will always exist, points lists or no.

I'm unconvinced that keeping player statistics will have any particular effect on increasing attendance, and possibly could have a negative effect on those that don't do so well.

Increased attendance basically will only come from the ranks of those that won't do so well, at least in the beginning. Putting those new players on the bottom of a rating list, (or hiding their ratings) isn't much of an incentive.

I think the ratings list idea is really only attractive to those players that already are coming on a regular basis.

There is nothing intrinsically WRONG with having a ratings list; I think expecting its existence to somehow ramp up total attendance is naive.
