Excellent post Rob.

The ABT point system is not seriously broken, and it does in fact spur attendance of top level players as winning the ABT is a great achievement and something any player will feel is really worth something and is entirely a measure of real success. It is clear to me that many top level players are attending many more events today than years ago, and that is IMO because of the current ABT system. I would hate to see it diminished. The presense of top players are a draw for many others who enjoy the tournament scene and the opportunities it presents to watch the best play live and even discuss and learn. I know that when I was an intermediate, this was a great appeal for me. So I feel pretty strongly that the ABT point system could perhaps benefit from some tweaks, but should not be radically changed. The achievement should not be diminished.

That said, I think you have some great ideas for supplemental systems of recognition that would allow the masses to have attainable goals too that make them want to come back to try to make progress towards those goals. Goals need to make one stretch and work, but they also need to be attainable. I'd like to see it fly. Obviously, it starts with the collection of data. And these thoughts may give additional insights on what additional data should be collected. Keep the good and innovative ideas coming.

I'd like to see a registration fee only required for ABT main events. You can still have all of the side events for money. You can still have one or more side pools in the main event. But how many players are scared away by the entry fees that might attend otherwise? How many good players sandbag in the intermediate division because they can't afford to step up? How many top players chasing ABT points would decide not to show up because there's less money to be won in the main event? A few for sure, but if it pulls in 20 others in their place, it is better for the game.
