Ray: I surely don't want to inhibit attendance or kill backgammon. Maybe I'll decide that it is just not worth it... As apparently Matt Reklaitis did. I don't know but I just refuse to believe that we can't keep at least some stats without killing the goose that laid the golden egg.
One one hand: you have players who'd really like to see some stats... it almost doesn't matter why... they'd just like to have them.
On the other hand: you have very experienced directors cautioning about negative impacts of collecting stats.
Like you, I too hope there is common ground... because if there are enough people that want to have them, naturally someone is going to try to satisfy that need whether its good in the long run or not, and that is a risk to be dealt with.
I agree with Bill Davis that the information needs to be treated carefully, as I fear he may be correct about negatively impacting attendance as a result. If there's a way to both collect stats and address this concern, then great... because having the stats collected with the good graces of the directors by a trusted group would be a great barrier to ever having an independent group you don't trust doing it on their own, and would add some extra enjoyment for the regulars who want to have them.
