I agree with you to a point but if there was a $50 entry fee no out of state players would turn up.

Being in the red is more because of the hotel and air fare (and food parking taxis etc), so whether you pay $50, $100, $200 or $500 it's not going to make such a huge difference and I think most people would rather play one event a year with a chance to win $10,000 than ten events with a chance to win $2,000

I don't have a solution except maybe negotiating lower hotel rates would be nice. And building local clubs up is the key to finding new talent.
