Attendance ... Perhaps it is the Money

I agree with what Bill says in this post.
I ran a tournament a couple of years ago in Santa Fe that sought to achieve the spirit of what Bill suggests. The entry fee was $50 and I offered side pools of $50 and $100. Only one division was available. I offered 100% return, since my only out of pocket expense was the winner's trophy. I was hoping that some locals would want to try their game.
I got a draw of 16, which is perfect for a director. Only one random newbie showed up, though (we recruited a few other locals). There wasn't any New Mexico club scene at that time--but now there is. Coolrey, MFIC, Lynda Clay and Joe Freedman (among known readers of this forum) were all nice enough to come. The winner got $1900, as the side pools were winner-take-all.
I continue to like the idea of a low entry fee combined with big side pools. This structure allows new folks to come and try the game in organized competition, and gives the pros a shot at a nice prize. It also eliminates advanced sandbagging, an ugly but little-combatted evil.
I may try to run this tournament again. I would keep the entry fee low but probably would have even more side pool action available. The low entry fee plus two side pools is what we use for our Madison club events, and it seems to have worked pretty well, as we have a pretty well-attended club for a town of our size. Is there any reason this structure wouldn't work at the ABT level?
