One possible scenario:

Player A and Player B are deep in the side pool.

Player C is not in the side pool.

Player A has advanced to the finals.

Player B plays Player C in the semifinals.

Whether the side pool is winner take all or whether the two finalists split it, if the amount in the side pool dwarfs the entry fee, Player B may be incented to offer Player C a cash payment to tank the match.
