I think you are right.

If I were to do this again I would pay the side pools in accordance with current ABT policy as regards main pool payouts, or maybe like ABT tourneys do the Calcutta payouts, or some reasonable variant thereof.

There's nothing wrong per se with side pools, though, is there? And doesn't what you say apply to the way side pools currently work?
